Brewing up a cup

Across the country, millions of Americans are drinking coffee every morning for coffee’s ability to wake you up. Colonists have made coffee a staple ever since they first settled in America. Countries around the world all have signature roasts that come from a few basic varieties of coffee beans.

Coffee bean varieties

The first two beans are the beans that most people commonly see and drink. They are cheaper than the other gourmet beans.

Arabica- This bean accounts for about 75% of all coffee exports. It has a better flavor than the Robusta bean.
Robusta- This bean accounts for about 25% of all coffee exports. This bean is generally cheaper and of a lower quality than Arabica beans.

These coffee beans are much more exotic and expensive, but also taste a lot better. In restaurants that serve gourmet coffee, these are the types of beans that they usually use.

Volcanica- This is a gourmet coffee bean that is grown on high volcanic mountains. It has a smooth and robust flavor.
Costa Rica- This is a gourmet coffee bean that is grown in Costa Rica. It has a clean bright flavor.
Jamaica Blue Mountain- This is a rare gourmet coffee bean grown in Jamaica. It is called the Rolls-Royce of coffee because many people think it has the best taste out of the gourmet beans.
Kona- This is a coffee bean grown in the volcanic soil of Hawaii. It has a robust taste and flower-like notes.

How to cook the perfect cup of coffee

The perfect cup of coffee relies on three basic factors: the water, coffee beans, and how you brew it. Basically, if you have bad tasting water, you will have bad tasting coffee. The temperature of the water has to be hot, but not boiling. Boiled coffee often has a “cooked” taste to it, which many people say tastes bad.

The better quality bean it is, the better tasting your coffee will be. Coffee beans also taste best when they are freshly ground right before you want to make your coffee. Freshly roasted beans also taste best when freshly roasted. You must be extra careful when roasting because a coffee bean that is too light won’t have any flavor, and a coffee bean that is too dark will have a bitter taste. Roasted beans lose their flavor within a week, so it is recommended that you use them up before a week. Never put your beans in the refrigerator or freezer because this will dry out the beans. The best way to store your beans is in an air-tight container in a cool dark place.

The way you brew your coffee greatly affects the taste of the coffee. Some people prefer the French press, but most people don’t have that kind of time so they use a coffee machine. By using the French press, the richness of the coffee is greatly enhanced, but the drawback is it is harder to use than the coffee machine.
